Today, I got up early, went to JB's, then went with her to the hospital where she had blood taken for some tests. Her boyfriend gets dizzy and pale white when he sees medical stuff on TV and faints at the sight of a needle, so I went with JB to ensure she didn't, you know, pass out.
She had suggested I meet her at 10am.
I countered with a very un-me time of 9am. I knew I didn't want to miss the inauguration.
We went to the hospital, she got blood drawn, we stopped at Subway on our way back to her place, I booted up my laptop and went to CBC.ca and watched the streaming coverage with one of my best friends and saw it all from the point Biden came out on to the platform around 11:35ish.
JB and I alternately cheered, clapped, nodded with grins and got goosebumps. Our eyes welled up with tears.
Americans, you have done a great thing. You have replaced fear with hope. You have replaced imperialism with democracy. You have brought Abraham Lincoln's words to life. All men are created equal.
I'm not American. I mock the US often. I poke fun at my neighbours to the south for any number of things, such as not putting a U into neighbour or colour. I wonder why there are hockey teams in states where it doesn't even snow.
And through it all, I poke fun at the US and the Americans because I love you guys. It's like irritating an older sibling. "Hey, dummy, you can't spell," or "hey, moron, the puck is supposed to go in THAT net," or "yes, actually, the Canadians did win the War of 1812. How do I know? BECAUSE I'M NOT AMERICAN, genius," are all expressions of affection.
Are there some things I dislike about the US? Yes. Could I ever really live there again? No. Absolutely not.
But I still love you guys.
And today... after watching yet another American attain that highest office of President, Head of State and Commander-in-Chief, I think I love you guys a little more.
Well done, America.
(I will deny any and all affection for the United States of America in a violent fashion if it's ever mentioned again.)
