Six Apart is
at it again (go Missy!) and is deleting journals without warning. Yes, at least one suspension had to do with Snarry art, which is what people seem to be focused on, rather than focusing on the fact that the LiveJournal terms of service are vague and subjective when it comes to mature subject matter.
LJers have been filling up the
news posts to 5000 comments with various comments such as well-thought out arguments, mature images, image macros (generally cats), song lyrics, pictures (screencaps generally) of same-sex affection, YouTube embedded videos of the same... Basically anything to get their attention.
And it seems attention has been gotten by
Abe Hassan, a LJ/SA employee (whose personal journal is found at
burr86), because he publicly mocked the complaining customers. There has been no official response from LJ, there has been no clarification of their vague policies, there has been no notification of changing policies... nothing. And yet, this douchebag mocked the customers and users that pay for and use the site.
The thread was at
http://community.livejournal.com/efw/117416.html and has been deleted, but yours truly has a screenshot. Click the cut to see it. There were more comments, but alas, they were posted afterwards and subsequently lost in the deletion of the thread.
( burr86 is a douche. )I've set up journals at GreatestJournal (from the last time LJ fucked people over) and InsaneJournal, both using brinshannara as my username.
I'm basically just chillin' to see where fandom will pick up and move to before I move. I'm all backed up in case they delete my ass for being somewhat obnoxious over in the news posts in question (the most recent 2 are filled with max comments, the 3rd most recent is filling up) and I'm going to continue being somewhat obnoxious until I hear something.
Should you want to backup your LJ, nothing could possibly be easier -- seriously.
http://brown-betty.livejournal.com/284083.htmlExcellent post.
Why am I considering moving? Because
ponderosa121 and
elaboration received no warning before being permanently banned. I think it's ponderosa who had a permanent account, too. And you'll see that the strikethrough from a deleted journal is now no longer there -- there's no link, no strikethrough... it's just bold, now. As if that's going to make it less obvious that something is not right with those journals. Coincidence that this change in displaying deleted journals started RIGHT WHEN these two users were banned? I think not.
I've never trusted Six Apart since it became more than "Ben and Mena". I KNEW it was bad news when SA bought LJ. And now they're enforcing vague, subjective policies that can be applied to any "questionable" content -- that could apply to fic, to icons, to fan art, to fan vids... to anything, really. Their policies are UNCLEAR and are allowing them to sweep out "undesirables". Do I really want to see Snarry art? Hell no. But do I want SA/LJ to be the judges of what is art and what is obscene, without clear guidelines to determine which is which? No. In the current political climate in the United States, that could mean that all things gay are obscene. They certainly seem to be targetting
pornish_pixies, but what about
erotic_elves, the straight counterpart of PP? None of their posts have been reported as obscene. Not that I want
erotic_elves to be reported, but if
pornish_pixies is, there's no reason their counterpart shouldn't be.
This is the subjective part of the policies come into play, IMHO. And I'm really not thrilled by this.
ETA: A really good article that explains basically what the hell is going on:
