I am so bored. I'm at the library, reading Marx of all things, and I'm tired and I'm hungry and blah. I wanted to be done with this paper tonight, but that might not happen because I haven't finished the first of the two readings yet.
Also, embarassingly, I got my Coke bottle taken away from me by the nice security guard. He said "I'll give you a choice. You give me the Coke. Or, you keep the Coke and you give me your ID number."
Not being a student at McGill, I gave him the Coke. It's upstairs at the circulation desk for me to retrieve it when I leave.
I'm really ravenous. I should convince my friend C to go eat, but I don't think she's hungry yet.
And now for something completely different. Apparently, if the Washington Redskins lose on Sunday, John Kerry will win the election.
Seriously. For the last 70+ years, the result of the last Redskins home game before the presidential election has predicted the result of the election. If the Redskins lose their game, the challenger will win. If they win their game, the incumbent will.
As someone who lived in the DC area for a couple of years, whose girlfriend was a diehard Redskins fan, I go back and forth between hating them (bad associations and all) and hoping they'll do well, because I'm a sentimental fool.
The 'skins are hosting the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. This is my problem. I hate the Packers more than I have ever hated the Redskins.
I think I'll elect to ignore football altogether and just pray Kerry wins. ;)
ETA: Aha, that's where I read about this originally.
graspingbeauty mentioned it on her LJ earlier today, but I totally forgot where I got the information from originally. That was bugging me, and I'm glad I found the source again. :)

That said, all you Americans better go out and vote. Voting is one of the most important rights and responsibilities any of us in a free nation are given. Make use of it. And if you don't make use of it, don't fucking complain about who's elected, because you could have changed things with your one vote. Don't believe me? Look at how close Florida was last time! Every vote in Palm Beach County was incredibly important and if only a few thousand more people had voted (or been ABLE to vote), Bush wouldn't have gotten Florida and he wouldn't have won the election.
So your vote matters. Remember that.

And, the other non-incumbent election in recent years:
October 16th, 1988: Redskins vs. Phoenix Cardinals. Win: 33-17. Result, Republicans stay in power with George H. W. Bush, after 8 years of Reagan.
Pretty spooky.

Date: 2004-10-30 07:09 pm (UTC)What I don't understand, in either of our countries, is that voter turnout among the youth is very low. When I turned 18, I wasn't excited because I could legally drink. I was excited because I could VOTE. But too many people who are in their 20s don't vote and don't care, and I just don't get why. I've always voted. I missed a key provincial vote in '98 because my absentee ballot wasn't received in time, but apart from that, I've voted in a referendum, in three federal elections, and a provincial election. I've worked for both the province and the country at elections. I love it all day long. I just don't get why the future of your country doesn't interest some people.
Okay, enough ranting. I have to go to my parents' to carve pumpkins.
