So there I was, doing research for my oral presentation in Italian today, when my dialup connection flaked out on me.

Yay.

Redial.

No dialtone.

I then proceeded to panic and freak out and "did I not pay them?!" and then called my landline from my cellphone. The landline phone did not ring, but I got my voice mail, eventually. This means my phone line had not been cut off.

I started pacing, checking for a dialtone every few seconds. Nothing. Nothing! I was preparing to call Bell to bitch them out from my cell when I looked at my DSL modem.

THE DSL LIGHT WAS ON.

I hit talk on my cordless phone. THERE WAS A DIALTONE. PRAISE JESUS.

Of course, my DSL light on my modem being on does not, in any way, suggest I actually have DSL access at the moment. It's actually staying on for five seconds, then blinking off for half a second, so something's still fucked up, but IT SO IS NOT ME. And my phone line hasn't been cut off. Which is, you know, nice, since I'm not actually having to worry about something like that four hours before I have to leave for class, while writing an oral presentation.

I am on dialup again at the moment, but I keep looking over at the modem with lots of hope. After all, a flickering DSL light is better than no DSL light at all, right? Right.

So, okay. My credit card expired back in, oh, August. I use it rarely. Online purchases and my ISP bill every month.

I forgot to update the info with my ISP. (ETA: Info as in the card number of the new card I got from Visa in the mail.)

August, September and October went by, and my ISP (Sympatico) did not contact me via mail or phone. Email, yes, but I don't ever check my Sympatico address.

They suspended/cancelled my account when they couldn't charge my account after three months. Which is reasonable.

However, my credit card (which is always teetering near the limit) didn't have enough room on it to pay it all off. So I was stuck without Internet.

For about five minutes.

And then inspiration struck.

My father uses the same ISP, same plan, everything.

Popped in his user/pass and VOILA. Internet! Free! This was two, maybe two and a half, weeks ago.

I was going to pay them off this week, but I just barely didn't have enough room on the card, so I thought, nah, next Friday, after I get a bit of cash from my folks.

This morning, I woke up at quarter to ten. After having gone to bed at like, 6:45. That's three hours of sleep right there, folks.

But I couldn't get back to sleep. I could not shake this feeling that something was wrong. So I got up and checked my email.

Or tried to.

Internet go bye-bye.

The DSL light on my modem was not on. Panic ensued.

Long, LONG story of phone calls and stuff made short, I managed to pay them off entirely, my account is reactivated, but the LINE CARD that allows a DSL connection from my line to the Central Office was pulled out (this morning, presumably), and it won't be put back in until like, Thursday. They have downgraded me to dialup (unlimited!) for the time being, but will put me back to highspeed for next week. And I'm getting yet another modem from them, for some reason. I think I have five of the damn things. Anyways.

So it's all resolved.

BUT I'M ON DIALUP AND OMG IT'S SO PAINFUL HELP.

In other news, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire tonight with my bro, his GF, NC, KS and Asomethingoranother. The tickets are already purchased. :)

... I am in dialup hell. I shudder to think what my ping times will be on WarCraft.

(Relatedly, if you tend to post images on your LJ, please consider those of us poor schmoes on dialup and use a cut tag. Thanks!)
