So, for the last 14 years, I've been saying that I want to go back and do aikido classes again. I took a single semester of aikido back in my first semester of CEGEP. That was the fall of 1994.
Tonight, Wednesday, September 10th, I finally had an aikido class again.
Surprisingly, I don't suck. It's been 14 years but I had occasionally kept up some of the exercises, and I wasn't at all lost tonight. I was actually keeping up with the class very well. We learned some of the exercises I'd kept up and then learned a throw, which I already knew how to do, but still got confused over the footwork. As per usual. :)
The throw is called "shihonage".
I'd forgotten how awesome it feels to throw someone to the ground, regardless of height and weight. :D
Trouble is, the class is at the university gym and the studio we were in tongiht had no padding on the ground. Hooray for being thrown onto a hard, wooden floor about 40 times. ;)
It basically went well. My legs are still all jelly-like and I totally bruised my butt. I also had a small wardrobe malfunction. First of all, I can fit into my gi from when I was 17, which, you know, is awesome. But I've completely forgotten how to suit up in it, for lack of a better term. My pants nearly fell off after all the warmup exercises. ;)
I also still have to refresh my memory on falling properly, to prevent further bruising of my tender behind.
And, in other news, my maternal grandmother, my Grandmaman, is 90 years old tomorrow/today. (September 11th.) After a difficult couple of months, she seems to be doing much better. She's been out of the hospital for a couple of weeks and my uncle (her son) Pierre is in town for her birthday and such. She's still recovering, really, I think, but she's doing okay.
And completely unrelated to my grandmother... Space, the Canadian version of the Sci-Fi channel, has started airing DEEP SPACE NINE. I am SO psyched about this. DS9 was never a show I watched a ton of, but I eventually got really into it, dark, dank station or no. I'm looking forward to seeing some episodes I've only seen once.
Bed soon, Consumer Society tomorrow afternoon. I have a feeling I'll be sleeping pretty darn well.
