La féte de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste

Today is Québec's National Holiday.
That's right. My province has its own "national holiday". It's not even its own COUNTRY, and it has a "national holiday". I know. It's weird.
It used to be a day to be proud of being a Quebecer, to be proud of your Quebec heritage...
And now, it's a day for all the separatists to gather 'round and be all "QUEBEC SHOULD SEPARATE NOWNOWNOW".
Which is sort of sad, really.
This is why I generally do not participate in the Saint-Jean festivities. (And yes, that's Saint-Jean-Baptiste, as in Saint John the Baptist. Everything in Quebec is about Catholicism or hockey. I kid you not. Our most foul swear words are derived from words in Catholicism -- "tabarnak" is from "tabernacle", for instance, and is a very foul word indeed.)
This afternoon, I am at my parents' house, sitting on the back porch, kidding myself that I'll get any research methods work done, as I sit and enjoy the sunny day and the breeze.
My parents are up north, though my mom returns tomorrow, and my brother will be leaving for the cottage shortly. I'm staying here overnight to take care of my puppy dog (well, she's 14, but she's STILL my little bitty puppy doggy!) because they're renovating the cottage and it's not worth the trouble of bringing the dog up north for less than 24 hours, mostly because there's no room for my doggy amid the mess.
Tonight -- movie with JB and her roommate, V (not
goldfishdreams, but another, lesser V), and then stopping by my place with JB to pick up The L Word eps, then going to Dairy Queen for ice cream with her, then back to my parents' house to watch an ep, perhaps. And then I'll drive her back home.
Oh, yes. Lots of driving for me today. Yipe.
(I know
drsnicket will be happy to hear all that, though.)
Speaking of
drsnicket, congratulations again, sweetie! I'm so glad it all went well!
Belated birthday wishes to my very first boyfriend,
llnaughty and the ever-lovely
amesville, who celebrated yesterday and the day before respectively.
Randomly, I wonder if I can convince my brother to take my mom's car up, leaving me with the Pathfinder... Probably not, but it may be worth a shot.
Also, wireless routers/cards and laptops with a long battery life totally rock my entire universe.
That is all. Have a lovely Friday if you're anyone but a Quebecer, and bonne Saint-Jean to you if you ARE in Quebec.

Date: 2005-06-24 09:33 pm (UTC)"tabarnak d'estie de caulisse!" means something along the lines of "Fucking goddamn shit". Or something. There's no real direct translation.
