So, I got my second stats assignment back. The bastard docked me three marks (6%) for not stating on the graphs that they were a PIE CHART, a PIE CHART and a POLYGON.
These were my only mistakes, so I got a 94%. But SIX PERCENT for not marking that it's SO OBVIOUSLY a PIE CHART/POLYGON? Grr.
I'm still cold. Stupid fall!

Seriously, is it Wednesday yet? :/
OH. And I have my stats midterm A WEEK FROM THURSDAY. The day after my Sociology of Cyberspace midterm.
Gah.

Abortion? | I could probably never, ever have one myself. But there are lots of people out there who aren't me, who might choose to. I'd like to keep it safe and legal. |
Death Penalty? | Against. Mistakes are made, and one innocent person dying is one too many. |
Prostitution? | Honestly, I think it should probably be decriminalized, at the very least, if not actually legalized and regulated. |
Alcohol? | Not for me, except a little champagne on special occasions, but I don't have a problem with it, so long as it's done in moderation. |
Marijuana? | Done it, not proud or happy about it. Again, probably something that should be decriminalized, despite my personal feelings about it. |
Other drugs? | Increasingly, I'm more of a "drug abusers need help" than "need punishment" person. But I don't like the idea of recreational drug use. |
Gay marriage? | Absolutely for it, and proud to live in a country in which about half the provinces/territories allow/recognize it. |
Illegal immigrants? | Against, I suppose. But it depends on the case, I guess. |
Smoking? | I loathe smoking and I've never done it. Never will. I hate to see people I care about sucking on those cancer sticks. Don't do it. |
Drunk driving? | Don't be a fucking moron. If you've had a drink, don't drive. If you're going to drive, don't drink. Pretty simple. |
Cloning? | Depends on what kind of cloning, but on the whole I support research for it. |
Racism? | Racism bad. Race is a social construct anyways, and it only has meaning because WE GIVE IT meaning. I mean, we're all of the HUMAN RACE, aren't we? |
Premarital sex? | I think it's fine, but I do believe one should have a deep emotional attachment to the person with whom they're sleeping. At least, that's what I do. |
Religion? | Religion good, organized religion less good. I miss attending church, though. Too bad the Catholic church, you know, hates me. |
The war in Iraq? | Extremely stupid, and I'm so glad to be Canadian, you don't even know. |
Bush? | See above. |
Downloading music? | I do it illegally and infrequently. TV shows, on the other hand... |
The legal drinking age? | In Quebec and Manitoba, it's 18, the rest of Canada, it's 19. I think 18 is fine. 21 is just silly. |
Porn? | Blah blah, objectifies women, blah blah. I don't really care, as long as it's not being delivered to my inbox/mailbox. |
Suicide? | Permanent solution for temporary problems, unless you're talking euthanasia, in which case, really, who am I to say "no, you can't die despite your suffering"? |

Date: 2004-10-05 10:38 pm (UTC)I do, however, have something that I want to say in regards to your "drunk driving" response.
At some point along the way, "don't drive drunk" became "don't drink and drive." Which are NOT the same thing. I'm curious about your statement: "If you've had a drink, don't drive." Do you think that someone is truly impaired if, while having dinner at a restaurant, they had one or two glasses of cabernet sauvignon with their steak? I'm not an alcoholic by any means, would never EVER drive if I was drunk and I know my limits very well (two glasses of wine with a meal doesn't even cause a buzz). But I'm terrified that, if I got pulled over after dining out, I would be, at the least, detained because I had ANY alcohol in my system.
MADD's original intention of getting drunks off the streets has now become "You better not drive after having ONE SINGLE DRINK or your ass is gonna be DESERVEDLY thrown in jail because you're a worthless lowlife and you're gonna pay for the rest of your life." In fact, Candy Lightner (MADD founder) has said that this was not her intention at all, that she wanted to get rid of the truly DRUNK drivers but that the movement has spiraled out of control and it's moving toward a No Tolerance situation. And even if law enforcement doesn't go that far, I really believe that MADD is trying to at least get public opinion to the point where just one drink before driving is completely irresponsible and worthy of condemnation.
Um.... wow. I wonder where that came from... Ah, I think it's because I've spent the past two hours reading threads in

Date: 2004-10-06 01:41 am (UTC)I don't think it should be illegal for someone to drive after one drink (assuming one drink doesn't knock them on their ass like it would me). What concerns me is people thinking they're okay to drive and not actually being okay, and driving anyways.
As a new semi-driver, I'm learning all the stuff people have to do and think about while driving. The very idea of someone having to do ALL OF THAT STUFF while being impaired in any fashion is terrifying to me. I mean hell, I have enough trouble merging while being wide awake and totally sober. While I'm being taught how to be a defensive driver, there's still an awful lot of trust towards other drivers out there that is inherent in the system of driving. I *trust* that the person behind me will brake when he/she sees my brake lights on. I *trust* that the cars going along the street I'm about to cross will stop at their red light.
Just because I take precautions (waiting to ensure the cars have stopped, for instance) doesn't mean I don't trust and expect them to follow those rules.
I think that a lot of people take a lazy view to driving (and I'm sure I will too, eventually, once I'm more used to it) -- lots of people don't check their mirrors when they're supposed to, they don't come to complete stops at stop signs, etc. Adding alcohol (or any drug) to the mix of these over-confident, "driving's no big deal" type of people is what frightens me. They're more likely to not take proper precautions or act according to situations if their judgment is at all impaired.
So my personal view is along the lines of "Don't drink if you're going to drive", but there are exceptions to that. If you know you're sober, if you know and respect your limits, if you truly know what you're doing, then I have no problems. I'd just prefer (and would prefer others) to err on the side of caution, you know?
And I guess the whole thing is different when I'm talking about driving down a busy street at night in a big city, when there's a lot of traffic and pedestrians to watch out for.
