That was distinctly... bad.
Aug. 20th, 2005 06:55 amAround 2 in the morning, having finished laundry, I left my parents' house and went to C's.
I had paperclips for her, and she had NINETEEN highlighters and a mess of those black clips with metal legs for me.
We did some computer stuff together -- a music exchange, some burning of CDs... It took YEARS, it seemed, but at 6:15am or so, I was ready to go.
So I headed out with my goody bag and my laptop, and realized it was POURING FUCKING RAIN out. Oh, the joy of driving in the light of dawn when it's pouring.
I got to the car mostly dry, sort of, and proceeded to drive along the street I was on, turned left to go up the hill, then right at the top of the hill before heading left again to get up the rest of the hill, and on to the main road that would take me 2/3 of the way home, basically.
All through my drive, I was being very careful and cautious, 'cause, you know, rain and bad lighting, and everything was fine. I even made a legal left-hand turn at an intersection that prohibits left-hand turns from 6:30am-10pm every day, since, ha-ha, I was there at 6:24.
So I drove along the road that's one of my own cross-streets, and, as usual, turned down this one street that I ALWAYS go down.
Now, at the end of the (fairly long) block, there is an intersection with a traffic light. This traffic light turned green while I was coming down the street. It being rainy and wet and stuff, and given that the light would be a "stale" green by the time I got to the intersection, I prepared to make my left-hand turn, but slowly enough so that I could come to a complete stop if the light changed to yellow.
The light was still green by the time I got there, but I saw a minivan coming RIGHT AT ME from the left, just as I began to clear the corner, so I SLAMMED on the brakes, the asshole SPED RIGHT BY ME, RUNNING THE RED LIGHT without slowing down or stopping, and I leaned on the horn and then threw my hands in the air.
"What the FUCK?!" I demanded of no one in particular. Or, perhaps, the universe.
Anyways, I was now fairly into the intersection, and the light was red, so I looked around and carefully finished my turn, my heart pounding.
I got home (three blocks from there) safely, but seriously! What the fuck??
They say that most car accidents happen within a 5 block radius of home. And dude, it's true. My first real near-accident was three blocks away from where I live.
Creepy.
My heart's settling down now, but the adrenaline hasn't worn off, yet. Freaky, freaky shit.
I need to go write to JB before going to bed.
