So I was on the phone with my friend C, reading her email to her (since she's at her mom's and doesn't have her computer with her), and she dictated a reply for me to send to someone.
I read it back to her.
"No, no, too much emotion!"
"What, the text?"
"No, in your reading it back!"
We have come to the conclusion that I am incapable of just plain reading text without adding my own interpretation/inflections into it. She was like "You're going to have to read to my kids, if I ever have any, and then one night they'll say, 'Mommy, why can't [my name] read to us?' and I'll have to say 'Shut up, kid, I'm reading tonight.'"
I laughed, and said it was all my friend Alex's fault, for introducing me to Dave Barry and Adventure Dog. Since then, I've tried to make reading aloud fun (which probably got me the job of news reader at my college radio station, ten years ago).
"Adventure Dog?"
So I just read Adventure Dog (text here) over the phone to her, to show what I meant. She cracked up. "Isn't it great?" I asked.
"It's awesome, but so much of it is the way you read it!"
So, my thanks to Alex, wherever she may be, for sharing Adventure Dog with me.
(And I'll share it with you: click here for an MP3 of me reading it..)
