So I picked up my loan certificate yesterday. $745 lovely Canadian dollars represented by a blue sheet of paper. Interestingly, it's not like a cheque or anything, but I have to redeem this certificate thingy at one of four banks. They are Desjardins, Laurentian, Bank of Montreal or National. Of course, I've always only used the Royal Bank for my banking needs. I'm loyal like that, and the concept of opening an account at another bank is, well, icky to me.
As it happens, there's a National Bank about two and a half blocks away from my house. So today, I headed over there to redeem my loan certificate and then, presumably, take my $745 and drop it into my own bank, about six blocks further away.
Apparently, this is Not How These Things Work.
I must first have an account at the bank where I would like to redeem my loan certificate. Okay, so, fine, set me up with an account.
New accounts are opened by appointment only at this bank. Or, I suppose, by appointment only if I'm planning to redeem said certificate.
The soonest appointment is next Tuesday, which is, to be frank, Not Fast Enough, based on some nasty calls from creditors. (Well, one nasty call and one really nice call from my buddy Pascal at the collections agency. That man is too nice to me.)
So I walked out of the bank and went grocery shopping, as I'd originally intended to do, and thought about what I can do about this.
It seems to me that the best solution is to go with Desjardins, because that way, I don't have to trek my ass all the way to that bank in the future to make payments to Pascal (since I pay him/his collections agency through an inter-branch deposit at Desjardins) -- I could just do it online.
When I got home, I called the Desjardins branch at which I usually make my Pascal payments, just to see what the deal is for making an appointment/redeeming the certificate.
If I go in tomorrow, I'll be called for an appointment next week.
Lovely. But that's pretty much what I'm going to do, if only because it'll be a lot easier to send money to Pascal then. Yay for Internet banking!
Until I get that account opened, I've got a lovely blue piece of paper that is absolutely worthless to me. It's like, I know the money's in there somewhere, but why won't it come out?!
Sigh. I think I'll take the next hour or so and clean my keyboard while watching TV. It's been a while, and I now have Q-tips to help do the job. Wheeee.
