Marina Sirtis was on Grey's Anatomy tonight.
Here's the catch: I did NOT recognize her.
I was like "oh, who's this older woman in the hospital and what's her story?" and then...
Then she spoke.
And I was like "Huh. I know this voice." It just annoyed the hell out of me that I knew the voice because I just couldn't place it, but it was so damn familiar...
So I was looking at her and listening to her talk and then it CLICKED.
THAT WAS FREAKING DEANNA TROI.

She was looking old. I mean, I know. TNG was on 20 years ago. But holy shit, I should not have to rely on the woman's voice (with a foreign accent, no less -- not British, not Troi-esque, but something along those lines) to recognize Marina Sirtis. Day 26 - OMG WTF? Season finale
Choices, choices... I guess Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I". Seeing Picard in full-on Borg regalia, saying "I am Locutus of Borg" and Riker saying "Fire!"... But the Season 2 finale of Alias was huge, too. "Vaughn, why are you wearing that ring?" Oh, that kills me every time.
Day 27 - Best pilot episode
It might not be the BEST, but there was something about the pilot for 3rd Rock from the Sun that just had me HOWLING. I think it's a little less funny these days, but it definitely hooked me.

Day 28 - First TV show obsession - Probably The Dukes of Hazzard. I clearly remember sitting in my basement watching CBS at 8pm on Fridays just to watch "The Duke Boys". It used to be on at 9, with Dallas at 10, but it all shifted an hour earlier in 1982. I was definitely watching The Dukes in 1981 (at the age of four!) because I remember Deputy Cletus and I remember watching The Dukes the next season and going "Mommy, Daddy, where are the Duke boys?!" because their "cousins", Coy and Vance, took over for a year.
Note that at no time during the first run of this show did I have ANY IDEA WHATSOEVER that they had run moonshine. I didn't even know what moonshine was.
Day 29 - Current TV show obsession - No real obsessions right now, but I'm definitely hooked on Covert Affairs. Not sure if it's entirely due to Piper Perabo or because I think the show is cute, but I'm hooked anyways.

Day 23 - Most annoying character
Ooooh, this is a bit of a toughie.
There's Joxer, of course, from Xena. Drove me up the wall. Although he was kind of funny in some episodes (Been There, Done That and The Bitter Suite to name a couple).
There's Dawn Summers, in basically all of Season 5 and most of Season 6 of Buffy. I pretty much hated her right up until Seeing Red.
There's Lana Lang from Smallville. Sadly, I got sucked into most of the first six seasons of this show and put up with the ever-annoying Lana and the almost more annoying pining over her by Clark. Ugh.
There's Bill Compton from True Blood. I swear to God, if I hear him say "Sookeh!" even once more, I may resort to physical violence.
Ultimately, though, I think the most annoying character has to be virtually anyone from The Office these days. They're all driving me insane. I used to like Jim and Pam and could even tolerate Michael to an extent, but these days, they're all driving me nuts. Jim and Pam have lost their minds. Dwight hasn't changed terribly much, but I never did like him. Angela is pathetic and desperate. Michael has always annoyed me. Andy has gone from being relatively amusing to being ultra stupid. I think Creed is probably the only character left on that show who is even remotely amusing to me these days. And that's why I'm done with The Office.

Day 22 - Favourite series finale
"All Good Things...", Star Trek: The Next Generation
Yes, I stated that as my favourite episode of my favourite show way back on Day 6. But it holds true. It is my very favourite series finale. TNG went out while it was still popular. Some of the seventh season episodes were a little uneven, but some of them were brilliant and the show, overall, was still a great one. I think that going out on such a beautiful high note is what every series strives to do.

Yes, I stated that as my favourite episode of my favourite show way back on Day 6. But it holds true. It is my very favourite series finale. TNG went out while it was still popular. Day 21 - Favourite ship
Again, there are three major contenders.
#3) Xena and Gabrielle, Xena: Warrior Princess
If I'm not mistaken, this was my first real same-sex 'ship. While it was not my first disappointment in terms of 'shipping (a 'shipper's life is not easy; you're destined to get your heart ripped out a dozen times), it is definitely one of the 'ships that captured my imagination. The important part in 'shipping is that it affects you, personally, not that it necessarily gets resolved on-screen.
#2) Willow and Tara, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
There are no words to express how amazing this relationship was.
#1) Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher, Star Trek: The Next Generation
My very first official fandom. My very first official 'ship. I waited seven years for that Ready Room kiss. It was in this episode, pictured above, The Naked Now, that I fell for Captain Picard and Dr. Crusher. That's the very second episode.
In my head, The Great Bald One and The Auburn Goddess are living together in Labarre, France, post-movie-era. Never you mind that hussy Kamala, or that devious wench, Vash. Ignore Nella Darren. Don't even think about that bimbo from his time in The Nexus. And, as far as I'm concerned, Anij from Insurrection was an exceedingly poor substitute for Beverly.
Honourable mentions include:
Janeway/Seven, Star Trek: Voyager (Gina Dartt's fault!)
Jack/Irina, Alias (I just wanted those two to bury the hatchet and be a family again.)

Day 19 - Best TV show cast
Probably Friends. While you could do without Phoebe or Joey on occasion, the show wasn't complete without them. Phoebe's craziness ("... dance around naked. You know, with sticks.") and Joey's hilariousness ("What is Joey's favourite food?" "Sandwiches!" "The name of Joey's childhood imaginary friend?" "Maurice!" "His occupation?" "Space cowboy!") really added to the more serious storylines we saw with Chandler and Monica and Ross and Rachel. They were the newest of the group, given that Ross and Chandler had gone to college together and Rachel and Monica had been to high school together, but the show wouldn't have been the same without all six of them.
Honestly, can you imagine a Friends series without Smelly Cat or Dr. Drake Ramore?
I didn't think so.
Day 20 - Favourite kiss
Oh my GOD, so many choices. I've managed to narrow it down to the top three, and a bonus kiss that isn't from a TV show.
#3) The Ready Room Kiss from All Good Things...
I STILL get swoony.
#2) Every single Willow/Tara kiss from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but especially the one at the end of Entropy.
Here's the dialogue that precedes the kiss:

The kiss in Rejoined is just so meaningful, so poignant, and the best part about the entire episode is that it's not because they're two women that their love is forbidden. Here's the conversation between Kira and Bashir that explains the concept of "reassociation" and you can tell that the fact they're both women doesn't even faze either Kira or Bashir. (5m58s, but I love this whole intro.)

Day 15 - Favourite female character
Part of the reason I've taken FOREVER to get to Day 15 is because I struggled with this a lot.
On the heels of Dean Cain's Clark Kent, I wondered about Teri Hatcher's Lois Lane, because I did really enjoy the character. But that didn't feel right. How about Dr. Beverly Crusher, whom I've always adored? That didn't feel quite right, either. Willow Rosenberg? Tara Maclay? Nope, not what I was looking for.
I thought about Kimberly Brock from Picket Fences or any number of characters from All My Children (Julie Chandler, Hayley Vaughn, Erica Kane, Mona Kane, Bianca Montgomery, Maggie Stone, Frankie Stone) and a couple from Guiding Light (Olivia Spencer, Natalia Rivera) and even from One Life to Live (Kelly Cramer) but discarded them all.
How about Irina Derevko, who sits there happily in my icons? Tempting. But she's not my favourite because she's, you know, a vicious killer at times. ;)
After contemplating various others, like CJ Cregg, any number of women from The L Word, Nancy Botwin from Weeds, skimming over Dana Scully, briefly considering Juliet and Sun from Lost and hell, Erica on V (played by Elizabeth Mitchell as well), I finally realized which character I admired, rooted for, sympathized with and generally felt for more than any other.
She's a character who has always made me want to smile, laugh, cry or be terrified depending on what was happening to her on screen at the time. I've always enjoyed watching her do damn near anything, whether it's tailing her best friend's boyfriend, making out on the job, diving off a hotel balcony into a swimming pool, spending some quality time with her mom...
Yep. Sydney Bristow is my favourite female television character.
Day 16 - Guilty pleasure show
Most 1980s-era sitcoms. Everything from The Golden Girls to Family Ties to Growing Pains to The Cosby Show. I'll sit and watch these reruns over and over again. At the moment, I've been watching a ton of episodes of Perfect Strangers on YouTube, courtesy of someone calling himself (or herself) The Masked Mypiot, which just cracks me up.

I thought about Kimberly Brock from Picket Fences or any number of characters from All My Children (Julie Chandler, Hayley Vaughn, Erica Kane, Mona Kane, Bianca Montgomery, Maggie Stone, Frankie Stone) and a couple from Guiding Light (Olivia Spencer, Natalia Rivera) and even from One Life to Live (Kelly Cramer) but discarded them all.
How about Irina Derevko, who sits there happily in my icons? Tempting. But she's not my favourite because she's, you know, a vicious killer at times. ;)
After contemplating various others, like CJ Cregg, any number of women from The L Word, Nancy Botwin from Weeds, skimming over Dana Scully, briefly considering Juliet and Sun from Lost and hell, Erica on V (played by Elizabeth Mitchell as well), I finally realized which character I admired, rooted for, sympathized with and generally felt for more than any other.
She's a character who has always made me want to smile, laugh, cry or be terrified depending on what was happening to her on screen at the time. I've always enjoyed watching her do damn near anything, whether it's tailing her best friend's boyfriend, making out on the job, diving off a hotel balcony into a swimming pool, spending some quality time with her mom...
Yep. Sydney Bristow is my favourite female television character.
Day 16 - Guilty pleasure show
Most 1980s-era sitcoms. Everything from The Golden Girls to Family Ties to Growing Pains to The Cosby Show. I'll sit and watch these reruns over and over again. At the moment, I've been watching a ton of episodes of Perfect Strangers on YouTube, courtesy of someone calling himself (or herself) The Masked Mypiot, which just cracks me up.

Day 13 - Favourite childhood show
I watched a lot of television as a kid. I watched everything from Sesame Street and Mr. Dressup to Read All About It! and The Polka Dot Door, from Today's Special and The Electric Company to The Muppet Show and Fables of the Green Forest, from Readalong to 3-2-1 Contact.
I also watched a lot of cartoons and sitcoms and loved The Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas. (When I was five, we happened to be in Texas and drove through Dallas and I "da-da-DAH-da-da-da-da-da-daaaah"ed my way through the Dallas theme for the entire 20 minutes as we passed through the city, much to my parents' annoyance.)
My favourite show was nearly a tie, but childhood memories pushed the winner just past He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
The Transformers was probably the defining TV show of my childhood. I will not watch these newfangled movies that threaten to (and probably do) ruin what was a great show back in the day.
My favourite character was Bumblebee and I grew to adore Starscream (who I never noticed had the same voice as G.I. Joe's Cobra Commander. Seriously.) because he was constantly talking about deposing Megatron when you knew Megatron could crush him if push came to shove.
My friend C and her brother B and I would play at Transformers when we'd play make-believe. We actually went through three major fandoms, to be honest; Superfriends, Transformers and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. And when we did play Transformers, it was my favourite. The stories we created are still with me; I remember them so very clearly. I remember her brother, B, being Optimus Prime and being all selfless and brave and stuff in our stories. We really took to our favourite characters and embraced them. We watched the show daily in syndication and could have named damn near any transformer, Autobot or Decepticon, you'd care to challenge us with.
Having said that, all the stuff including the 1980s movie and beyond kind of left me blah. I cried when Optimus Prime died and could care less about Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime.

Day 14 - Favourite male character
I've given this one a lot of thought. The favourite female character list is extensive. But the favourite male character list is kind of lacking.

The show went downhill once Lois cut her hair and started eating frogs (long story) but Clark was always Clark. He was just this normal guy with an admittedly big secret and he always tried to do what was right. This version of the Superman legend was really good at explaining that Clark is who this individual is, while Superman is what this guy can do. Clark was some guy, not a dorky clod the way Christopher Reeve's portrayal was. Clark, in L&C, was likable and funny and occasionally angsty and I loved him. I also thought Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher were equally hot at the time (I'd definitely go with Teri Hatcher over Dean Cain these days, but he's still very cute!) so that also helps. ;)
I love the complexity and depth that we got in this Clark Kent. And it's Clark that I really like, who's my favourite. Superman's just several of his abilities and talents. Clark was just so relatable, which is hilarious, considering he's, you know, an alien. ;)

It's the episode where Captain Picard and Dr. Crusher are abducted and then are given a tricorder to break themselves out of their prison by a double-agent type person, and then they head for friendly territory on this planet that is applying to become part of the Federation. They're linked together basically at the brain and are privy to each other's thoughts, dreams and feelings. I had been shipping these two for YEARS by the time this episode came out, so I was SO EXCITED when I saw the promo. Which, thanks to the awesomeness of YouTube, is here:

This isn't fair of me, not at all, but Ellen disappointed me. 13 years ago, Ellen DeGeneres came out in real life and then her character came out in an episode called The Puppy Episode, which instilled in all lesbians an intense desire for a toaster oven. ;)
This episode is not what disappointed me. I loved it. It was perfect in so many ways.
What disappointed me were the episodes, most of them, after The Puppy Episode.
It's so easy to look back and judge after being steeped in 21st century ideology and society. Canada has had nationwide same-sex marriage legalized since 2005. Marriage in Quebec since 2004 and 2003 in Ontario and BC. Ellen came out six years before same-sex marriage was legal in my province.
So I really shouldn't be disappointed in the episodes that followed the coming out episode. I shouldn't be disappointed with how Ellen didn't deal with the gay thing enough or dealt with it too much. I really shouldn't judge it from the position of being firmly in the 21st century.
But I do. So it's disappointing. I don't put all the blame on the show, though; I am disappointed in ABC cancelling the show after the fifth season. I am disappointed in the ABC affiliates who did not air the coming out episode. I am disappointed in the advertisers who threatened to boycott the network because they were brave enough to show what they did.
Ellen paved the way for Tara and Willow's relationship on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, paved the way for Will and Jack (and even Karen) on Will & Grace. Ellen was what gave lesbians visibility on television that lasted beyond an over-hyped, ratings-based same-sex kiss like the one between Neve Campbell and Olivia d'Abo on Party of Five, or Wynona Ryder kissing Jennifer Aniston (and Jennifer Aniston then being kissed by Lisa Kudrow) on Friends. Ellen gave us so much in terms of visibility and acceptance that it feels wrong to be disappointed by it.
But it could have given us so much more, if only people (the network, the affiliates, the advertisers) weren't such cowards.

As anyone who knows me knows, one of my ex-girlfriends had a pretty bad marijuana habit. While initially in our relationship, her use of marijuana was occasional and fairly infrequent, towards the end of our relationship, she was getting high before work, at lunchtime (at work, in her truck in the parking lot), after work when she came home and again before bed. My personal stance on drugs (and drinking and cigarettes) has always been "no thank you" and I was okay with my girlfriend smoking on occasion, but it soon got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore. My stance on drugs has since hardened and I now have a much lower tolerance for anyone in my life getting high.
That's why it's so hilarious that I love the TV show Weeds. I mean, here is a show that is not only legitimizing and normalizing the use of marijuana as a recreational drug, but showing a woman selling it to maintain her lifestyle? And it even gets worse; Nancy gets into more and more trouble as time goes on. It's like a trainwreck.
It's ridiculous. I should hate this show with everything I am!
But I don't. I love it. I think Mary-Louise Parker is amazing, I love Andy and Silas and Shane. Even though I see Doug and think of Weekend Update with Kevin Nealon, I still think he's just hilarious.

Seinfeld is one of those shows that I didn't really watch when it was on the air. I never liked it when it was on the air, but that's more of a function of me not catching the first five minutes of any episode I sat down to try to watch.
Seinfeld is funny, clever and a variety of other words, but why I think everyone should watch a few episodes of it is because it's completely been embraced by pop culture. References to soup nazis, being the master of your domain, "man-hands", "yada yada yada" and the like are still all over the place today. I think that, like it or not, Seinfeld became an integral part of North American pop culture in the 90s and even in 2010, much of the show is still relevant. Silly and funny, but relevant. :)

Seinfeld is one of those shows that I didn't really watch when it was on the air. I never liked it when it was on the air, but that's more of a function of me not catching the first five minutes of any episode I sat down to try to watch.

Again, a little late.

This is not an easy choice. Likeshiningmoon, I have half a dozen episodes right off the top of my head that I can think of. Do I go with Attached, do I go with The Best of Both Worlds, do I go with Cause and Effect or The Game or Remember Me?
In the end, I have to say that though I love all those episodes I named and, in fact, love so very many TNG episodes, they saved the best for last.
All Good Things... was the perfect blend of all the best parts of TNG. You had a science-fictiony dilemma (the time-travelling) and a moral/ethical dilemma (Q judging humanity). You had character development (Captain Beverly Picard?!. You had snapshots from the beginning with the transfer of command and Data and O'Brien talking in Engineering ("burn the midnight oil").
Yes, there's a glaring error in the technological side of the plot; the anomaly isn't created by three beams from three Enterprises. There's two Enterprises and a Pasteur.
Yes, it's kind of mushy in parts.
But ultimately, Star Trek: The Next Generation wasn't a science fiction show. It was a show about humanity and the human condition. All Good Things... makes us laugh and I still cry at the end. It's a great rollercoaster, a great ride, and an amazing episode overall.
Also, the stardate 47988 is totally stuck in my head because of this episode and has been part of various passwords of mine since 1994. :)

I hate Everybody Loves Raymond. I don't know why, really. I don't think Ray Romano is funny at all. I don't even like Peter Boyle in his role on this show, although I adored him in The X-Files episode entitled "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" and various other roles.
I would rather watch Wheel of Fortune (another on my list of hated shows) than this one. Just not my style, I guess.
